
Your switchboard is the control centre of the house — every circuit runs through it. Plenty of older Adelaide homes still have ceramic fuse boards that were never meant for today’s load: air conditioning, induction, home offices, EV chargers. Here is what usually means it is time.
1. Fuses or breakers trip often
One trip because you ran the kettle and the toaster together is ordinary. Repeated trips with no obvious cause usually mean the board, the circuit, or both are undersized for how you live now. Don’t keep resetting and hoping — that is how insulation cooks.
2. You still have ceramic fuses
Rewirable ceramic fuses are a giveaway the board is decades old. Circuit breakers and residual current devices (RCDs) are faster and easier to reset. A ceramic board can still be made safe in some cases, but most of the time a modern switchboard is the cleaner job.
3. No safety switch
A safety switch (RCD) cuts power in milliseconds if current leaks somewhere it should not — including through a person. Circuit breakers protect the wiring; they are not fast enough to protect you. If there is no RCD on the board, that is one of the highest-value upgrades you can do.
4. The board feels warm, or you smell burning
Warmth, discoloured plastic, scorch marks or a burning smell at the switchboard is not a “keep an eye on it” item. Isolate what you can, don’t keep loading that board, and get it checked the same day if you can.
5. You are adding something hungry — EV, ducted AC, a big kitchen
Level 2 EV chargers, ducted air conditioning and some renovations need spare capacity and the right protection. An old board often cannot take that load safely. We check capacity before we quote the charger or the air con — not after it is on the wall.
