If the house still has halogen downlights, you are paying more than you need to for light — and putting a lot of heat into the ceiling space. LEDs are the default now for a reason. The upgrade is worth doing; the DIY bulb-swap is where people get caught.
What you actually gain
- Running cost — LEDs typically use around 80–85% less energy than halogen for similar brightness.
- Lifespan — A decent LED downlight is often rated 15,000–25,000+ hours. Halogen is closer to 2,000.
- Heat — Halogens run hot. That is a fire concern next to insulation in the roof, and it works against your air conditioning in summer.
- Light quality — Dimmable fittings and a colour temperature that suits the room are standard now, not a luxury.
Don’t just twist in a new lamp
Existing dimmers often disagree with LED drivers. Hole size, IC rating (can the fitting sit against insulation) and transformers on older low-voltage runs all matter. A whole-home conversion should be treated as an install, not a lamp change. We check the circuit and the roof space so you are not stacking load or trapping heat around a cheap fitting.
You can supply lights, or we spec them. Either way the job should leave a ceiling that looks finished — trims flush, switches that make sense, no rattling cans.
